Re-Answering The Rubric

The Rubric

-Identification of Environmental or Logistical Problem (10%)
What are the negative effects of the The Problem

-Task: You will identify an environmental or logistical problem within the school that your group will attempt to solve/provide an alternate procedural

  • Environmental: the aggregate of surrounding things, conditions, orinfluences; surroundings; milieu.
  • Logistics: the planning, implementation, and coordination of the details of a business or other operation.

Our problem is that not all students are achieving as much as they would like to in many of their classes, specifically math.

Our plan of action to diminish this problem is to implement a system of Assessment Literacy in the classroom, which will provide students with a broader insight into how they are doing in the class and what they need to do to improve these grades.

Drawbacks:
Peers may not be as accepting of the grades that students achieve after applying themselves prior to the formal assessment process. -> Keeping the option open for students who regularly score well on tests may lessen their anger

Students may be to lazy to apply themselves to get the better grade-> after realization that they arent doing well without it, students may be more willing to apply themselves.

Students may use this program to carry themselves to a higher grade without necessarily putting in as much work as their peers. This could also skew the results of the grading system, giving too many people A's for free. In turn, the student would have to work as hard, if not harder, the second time around to recieve the A that they may or may not deserve.


This problem affects any students who wish to improve their grades by any measure. 

We will be giving these students a way to achieve higher than they would have, given the current assessment process.

This problem affects the school by making tests, and quizes more accomidating to students who are willing to put in more effort to achieve higher grades. 

This problem affects students who may not test well, be having a bad day, or just did badly for whatever reason, and are willing to put in more work to earn higher grades.

If a process of assessment literacy is implemented in our school, then the students who choose to utilize it will be able to earn better grades.

  • anticipated results
  • data collection
  • originality in planning and design of project

We conducted a survey asking students various questions to gauge their opinions on an Assesment Literacy program. Here are the results:

Formative Assesment

As a second example, for over a decade we have had persuasive empirical evidence showing that the classroom use of formative assessment can dramatically improve how well students learn. The formative-assessment process uses assessment-elicited evidence of student’s progress so both teachers and students can, if they need to, make suitable adjustments in what they’re doing. Formative assessment may not boost scores sufficiently on instructionally insensitive accountability tests so as to satisfy today’s unrealistic requirements, but formative assessment most certainly helps kids learn better what they need to learn. Who needs to understand this? Well, it should surely be all educators, all citizens (especially parents and policymakers), but it should also be students themselves. Students have a right to know that there’s an assessment-based process out there that, if employed by teachers, will substantially improve instruction.

This paragraph outlines the kind of test and communication we would like to impliment in the student/teacher level of assesments.

Answering The Rubric *UPDATE*

Task/Project Statement
We plan to implement a program which will allow students to meet with a teacher after tests or quizzes. In this meeting they will discuss what the student is struggling with and how the student can work to improve on these areas. Assignment(s) will be given to practice these techniques and credit will be given towards the students grade as an incentive to participate in the program.  

Who is most affected by the problem?
Students who are not told why or how they can improve when they fail who then continue to fail due to a lack of motivation, and knowledge.

How does this affect the daily school environment?
Students are given the tools necessary to continue on a path to success with their studies. Their grades will begin to improve in the subjects that this program is implemented.

Drawbacks:

Students could get so used to the help they are getting they do not try very hard. -> Grade improvement should not be so drastic that the student doesn’t need to try in order to succeed. Instead of going from a D to an A, a student would be able to go from a D to a C at most.

Lack of participation due to laziness -> Stress the importance of the grade in the long run and how coming in can improve it and how grades can influence a future educational experience in colleges and universities. Try to affect their apathetic mindset. Appeal to students

Teachers may be unwilling to implement our problem -> Appeal to the teacher regarding the benefits of the program and why it is important to the students


Despite drawbacks is your project “worth it?”
We believe our project is, in fact, worth the shortcomings it presents. Steps will be taken to prevent the drawbacks from disrupting the success of the program. Schools should provide students with all the tools necessary in order to achieve great accomplishments in school and in life.


How can you change your project to lessen these problems?
The best way to find problems that need to be changed in our project is by talking with students, and teachers involved in this program.  After these discussions we will deliberate as a group the feedback we receive and the steps that need to be taken in order to transform these ideas into new practices.
What are the negative effects of the problem?
People are failing  their classes because they have too little motivation to try and succeed because they do not know why they are failing; which is a direct result of the  inadequacy of the currently implemented testing process.

How does the problem affect the school?
There are a lot of quizzes and tests students get that they don’t understand, or just don’t do well. They should have the chance to try to learn the material at their own pace.

What We need to do.

Ways to apply our task
Discuss progress, what was most missed, relearn/do assingments with the teacher that target these areas, and have additional credit towards the unit for attempting to work with the instructor to improve their knowledge on the topic.

Where we need to implicate these tasks.
Before school, after. free periods, after a test or quiz, give the students options on a few times after a test whan they can come in for assistance

How can we go about implimenting this, and more specifically what area needs this most
contact teachers for cooperation, discuss objective with class', set up times for meetings, dicscuss opinions on program afterwards.

Who needs to be doing what
contact teachers that might be willing to help and the students that will most benifit from it.
